Starting counselling or therapy can be quite a challenge for many people. For a long time you may have thought it might be a good idea to get some help. Maybe one night you decided that tomorrow you will make that phone call or send that email, and you felt relieved. But the next morning you talked yourself out of it and said to yourself: ďOh whatís the point. Itís not that bad; I will muddle through somehow. Others are much worse off than meĒ.
It may seem like climbing Mount Everest just to make contact with a therapist: ďWhat will she think of me? Will she judge me or talk down to me? Where would I even begin? I donít even know whatís wrong with me. Maybe I should just buy a Self-Help book.Ē

Do these thoughts ring a bell? There is nothing wrong with self-help books - they do have their place. The only thing is that they wonít help you to break your isolation. You will still sit at home alone with a book in your hands, instead of face to face with a human being that cares.
Having to work it all out on our own is one of the most unhelpful ideas our culture has produced. The first step to healing is to tell another person what bothers you. Isolation is not a virtue; it is part of the problem. There are always people worse off, but there are also a lot of people better off; they lead happier and more fulfilled lives. You can be one of them if you feel ready to engage in this work.

Iím here to listen, and to talk with you in a comfortable setting (see right). The rewards of this work can truly be immense. Itís important to find a therapist whom you can trust and feel comfortable with. We will take some time to get to know each other and we can work out what exactly causes you difficulties or makes you unhappy.

I offer a free initial half-hour session with no obligations, and if you donít like me you can go away and find somebody you do like, without having to justify your decision. If you do decide to work with me, I will offer you a warm welcome, confidentiality and a safe, non-judgemental space within which we can explore your difficulties and learn to understand them and how to change them. Iím looking forward to hearing from you!
